Hermione Granger appeared in the first Potter novel, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” Her appearance was as a new Hogwarts student traveling to the school. She eventually became very close friends with Harry and many times used her encyclopedic knowledge and quick wit to help him.

She was a Muggle born student of the Gryffindor house. She is the daughter of two dentist parents, an overachiever who excels at her academic work. Her dentist parents are a little bemused by their odd daughter, but they are quite proud of her all the same.
In her initial appearance in Philosopher’s Stone, she met future companions Harry and Ron during the trip to school on the Hogwarts Express. Hermione constantly annoyed her school peers with her extensive knowledge. Ron and Harry initially thought her to be very arrogant, especially so after she criticized Ron’s Levitation Charm. Ron and Harry intently disliked her until the Troll in the toilet incident, which she was so thankful for that she lied to protect them, that was when their good friendship really began. Hermione’s adeptness for logical analysis later enabled the three of them to solve a puzzle that was essential for retrieving the Philosopher’s Stone.
Her most prominent characteristics are her cleverness and prodigious intellect. She is very level-headed, book-smart and very logical, although initially, she does have a tendency to panic in scary or intense situations, as she did with the Devil’s Snare at the climax of the Philosopher’s Stone. By the time of the Deathly Hallows, she had learnt to be much more instinctive and saved lives on more than one occasion with her quick thinking.
Hermione is quite often a little bossy but very loyal and very conscientious. She is someone that never strays off the path and always maintains her attention and focus on what must be done. Despite her intelligence and bossiness, she has quite a lot of vulnerability in her, also a sense of buried insecurity and can feel quite inadequate. To compensate, Hermione attempts to be the best at everything she does at school, in the process of projecting false confidence she can irritate others. Whilst doing her exams for the Defense against the Dark Arts at the end of the Prisoner of Azkaban, she revealed that her greatest fear was failure, when a Boggart took the form of Professor McGonagall and told her that she had failed all her exams.
One side of her personality is extremely compassionate and she is very quick to assist others, particularly those who are less able to help themselves, like Neville Longbottom, fellow Muggles, poor House Elves and half giants like Hagrid. She values her friends very much and is exceedingly protective of them.
During the whole Potter series, Hermione Granger is portrayed as an exceptionally talented student and young witch. She is considered to be the best student in Harry Potter’s year. She is often the first Hogwarts student to master spells and charms in her classes, and those classes of more advanced years. This was evidenced when she was able to conjure up the Protean Charm on the D.A.’s fake Galleon coins and this is a N.E.W.T. level charm. Hermione was also the first to be able to cast non verbal spells. Hermione is an accomplished and exceptional duelist, perfectly capable of out-matching even the Death Eaters, as she showed us in the battle that took place at the Department of Mysteries, at the Battle of Hogwarts and Lovegoods’ house.
