The Harry Potter Sorting Hat is the Hogwarts magical hat that determines and decides which of the Hogwarts school House new student are to be designated to. These houses are of course Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.
One of the founders of Hogwarts, Godric Gryffindor, was the original owner of the Sorting Hat. The hat’s usually stored with the Headmaster until it is brought out into the assembly for the sorting ceremony.

At the banquet at the beginning of the school year, all first year students have their names read out to take the seat and have the sorting hat placed on their heads. The Sorting Hat then, after a moments deliberation, informs out loud which house the student is to be placed. The Sorting Hat may very the time of deliberation taken, varying from a few seconds to a minute. The hat may at time speak directly to the student in question before it’s decision is made, as it was with Harry’s sorting.

The Sorting Hat each year recites a introductory song in front of the students. The songs vary in content and length each year and Ron Weasley might well be right when he said he thought that the hat donates the complete school year composing it’s next song.
The hat also sometimes warns of danger that may come to pass, as it was so in the song of 1995. It is not exactly known how the Sorting Hat becomes aware of such up and coming events, it has been suggested that it picks some information from the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.
The Hat seemed to have a certain amount of difficulty with the sorting of Harry. The hat suggested that great glory and fame would be found if Harry joined the Slytherin House, Harry had requested quite specifically and emphatically that he wished to be spared the threat of joining that particular house. It was due to this request from Harry that persuaded the Hat to place him into Gryffindor instead. This was the house where both his parents had been placed also. At the time when Harry wore the Hat for a second time, the hat repeated its first declarations in that Harry would have performed and done well in the Slytherin House.
During the second Hogwarts year, the Sorting Hat was a crucial role in Harry’s winning battle with the Basilisk. Valiantly the hat was brought to aid Harry by Fawkes in the Chamber of Secrets, which gave Harry Godric Griffindor’s sword, together these two items are known relics of that wizard.
Lord Vodemort tried to destroy the Sorting Hat by setting it alight whilst it was on top of Neville Longbottom’s head at Hogwarts in 1998. Longbottom managed to get the Godric Gryffindor sword with which he then beheaded Nagini. It was not very clear whether the hat was damaged due to the earlier sacrifice of Harry which was preventing any spell from Lord Voldemort hurting anyone Harry cared about.
