It sort of confirmed that Harry was the chosen one. Apart from the magic, which kids are fascinated with, the idea of a school with different houses was very clever. It allowed the readers to identify with a particular house or against another. I read the book as an adult and it reminded me of my own school days and the feeling of belonging to a house, having identity and responsibility.
