The house was founded by Salazar Slytherin and the head of House is Severus Snape in virtually all of the books. In the seventh book, Horace Slughorn, the old Potions master and previous Head of House came out of retirement and reassumed authority of Slytherin house.

Slytherin house ghost is “The Bloody Baron.” Slytherin roughly corresponds to the water element. The house common room and dormitories are accessed through the dungeons and bare stone wall. Their common room is long and low, a dungeon style and located under the lake at Hogwarts. It is furnished with carved chairs and green lamps. The description of the room in the 7th book was described as emanating a greenish glow.

Although it was not mentioned until the 5th Harry Potter book, blood purity is a major factor for Slytherin house members according to the Sorting Hat. This does does not mean that Muggles are not placed in this house but more so that pure blood is more desirable. There are examples that half bloods have been placed into this house, like Voldemort and Professor Snape.

Some Snatchers in the Deathly Hallows claimed that “not many Mudbloods” were placed into Slytherin house, but this suggests that Slytherin Muggle borns might not be common but are also not unknown.

Voldemort, believing Harry Potter was dead and that he was nearing his final victory, proclaimed that he would dissolve and abolish all other houses except Slytherin, thereby housing all Hogwarts student under Slytherin. This plan was stopped with his death and defeat, after, the blood purity of Slytherin became more diluted. It’s reputation for darkness lingers but it is no longer the pure-blood bastion that it once was.

Any self respecting Harry Potter enthusiast would wish to be sorted by the Sorting Hat into the house of Gryffindor. This is the house where our hero Harry and his courageous friends were placed.

At Hogwarts Castle, Gryffindor house is to be found on the 7th floor, where the house entrance is secreted behind the painting of a large, silk dressed woman. She will not refuse access to anyone who has the right password but she is known to give short shrift to any student that disturbs her whilst she is sleeping.

Behind her painting is the students common room. The common room, during daylight hours, is generally fairly busy with students. This room is the preferred place for students to study and socialize with their friends. Furnished with the normal chairs and tables and an information board for student to keep abreast of the school rules and information about school trips. The common room fireplace not only keeps the room warm but is a useful access point to the outside world with the “Floo” network.

From the Gryffindor common are two staircases, one of which leads to the female dormitory and the other leads to the male one. The females staircase is protected from males entering their dorm with an enchantment, but strangely enough the male staircase has no protection from the girls.

The House of Gryffindor has been the house where the most successful and famous witches and wizards have been housed, such as the head of Hogwarts, Sir Albus Dumbledore. Others have included well known people such as Harry’s parents, Lily Evans and James Potter, Sirius Black Harry’s godfather and the entire Redhead family of Weasleys.

Like every other house at Hogwarts, Gryffindor guards its secrets closely. Much still remains secret and has yet to be discovered. So Gryffindor is still full of past mysteries and has great expectation of the future and will always be known as a house where loyalty and courage is always treasured.

The Harry Potter Sorting Hat is the Hogwarts magical hat that determines and decides which of the Hogwarts school House new student are to be designated to. These houses are of course Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.

One of the founders of Hogwarts, Godric Gryffindor, was the original owner of the Sorting Hat. The hat’s usually stored with the Headmaster until it is brought out into the assembly for the sorting ceremony.

At the banquet at the beginning of the school year, all first year students have their names read out to take the seat and have the sorting hat placed on their heads. The Sorting Hat then, after a moments deliberation, informs out loud which house the student is to be placed. The Sorting Hat may very the time of deliberation taken, varying from a few seconds to a minute. The hat may at time speak directly to the student in question before it’s decision is made, as it was with Harry’s sorting.

The Sorting Hat each year recites a introductory song in front of the students. The songs vary in content and length each year and Ron Weasley might well be right when he said he thought that the hat donates the complete school year composing it’s next song.

The hat also sometimes warns of danger that may come to pass, as it was so in the song of 1995. It is not exactly known how the Sorting Hat becomes aware of such up and coming events, it has been suggested that it picks some information from the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.

The Hat seemed to have a certain amount of difficulty with the sorting of Harry. The hat suggested that great glory and fame would be found if Harry joined the Slytherin House, Harry had requested quite specifically and emphatically that he wished to be spared the threat of joining that particular house. It was due to this request from Harry that persuaded the Hat to place him into Gryffindor instead. This was the house where both his parents had been placed also. At the time when Harry wore the Hat for a second time, the hat repeated its first declarations in that Harry would have performed and done well in the Slytherin House.

During the second Hogwarts year, the Sorting Hat was a crucial role in Harry’s winning battle with the Basilisk. Valiantly the hat was brought to aid Harry by Fawkes in the Chamber of Secrets, which gave Harry Godric Griffindor’s sword, together these two items are known relics of that wizard.

Lord Vodemort tried to destroy the Sorting Hat by setting it alight whilst it was on top of Neville Longbottom‘s head at Hogwarts in 1998. Longbottom managed to get the Godric Gryffindor sword with which he then beheaded Nagini. It was not very clear whether the hat was damaged due to the earlier sacrifice of Harry which was preventing any spell from Lord Voldemort hurting anyone Harry cared about.

She was a Muggle born student of the Gryffindor house. She is the daughter of two dentist parents, an overachiever who excels at her academic work. Her dentist parents are a little bemused by their odd daughter, but they are quite proud of her all the same.

In her initial appearance in Philosopher’s Stone, she met future companions Harry and Ron during the trip to school on the Hogwarts Express. Hermione constantly annoyed her school peers with her extensive knowledge. Ron and Harry initially thought her to be very arrogant, especially so after she criticized Ron’s Levitation Charm. Ron and Harry intently disliked her until the Troll in the toilet incident, which she was so thankful for that she lied to protect them, that was when their good friendship really began. Her most prominent characteristics are her cleverness and prodigious intellect. She is very level-headed, book-smart and very logical, although initially, she does have a tendency to panic in scary or intense situations, as she did with the Devil’s Snare at the climax of the Philosopher’s Stone. By the time of the Deathly Hallows, she had learnt to be much more instinctive and saved lives on more than one occasion with her quick thinking.

Hermione is quite often a little bossy but very loyal and very conscientious. She is someone that never strays off the path and always maintains her attention and focus on what must be done. Despite her intelligence and bossiness, she has quite a lot of vulnerability in her, also a sense of buried insecurity and can feel quite inadequate. To compensate, Hermione attempts to be the best at everything she does at school, in the process of projecting false confidence she can irritate others. Whilst doing her exams for the Defense against the Dark Arts at the end of the Prisoner of Azkaban, she revealed that her greatest fear was failure, when a Boggart took the form of Professor McGonagall and told her that she had failed all her exams.

One side of her personality is extremely compassionate and she is very quick to assist others, particularly those who are less able to help themselves, like Neville Longbottom, fellow Muggles, poor House Elves and half giants like Hagrid. She values her friends very much and is exceedingly protective of them.

During the whole Potter series, Hermione Granger is portrayed as an exceptionally talented student and young witch. She is considered to be the best student in Harry Potter’s year. She is often the first Hogwarts student to master spells and charms in her classes, and those classes of more advanced years. This was evidenced when she was able to conjure up the Protean Charm on the D.A.’s fake Galleon coins and this is a N.E.W.T. level charm. Hermione was also the first to be able to cast non verbal spells. Hermione is an accomplished and exceptional duelist, perfectly capable of out-matching even the Death Eaters, as she showed us in the battle that took place at the Department of Mysteries, at the Battle of Hogwarts and Lovegoods’ house.

Magic broomsticks are used as transportation by all ages of wizards and witches. They are an essential piece of equipment for the game of Quidditch to. The broom is excedingly uncomfortable to sit on for extensive and long periods of time, even if you are using the now widely used cushion charm.

Flying broomsticks are major consumer products in the Harry Potter Wizarding world. There are a large number of broom brands and models, all of them will have varied capabilities. The capabilities will range from very expensive and high performance brand models to toy brooms for very young children, which will only hover and fly a few feet above the ground, to larger family sized brooms that have enough space for a whole family to sit on, they can even have a luggage area below the brooms seating area.

As Harry is a Quidditch team member and later captain, his brooms, which were a Nimbus 2000, and later the fantastic Firebolt, were very prominent in the Potter series. His Nimbus 2000 broomstick was given by special consent from Dumbledore by way of Minerva McGonagall, who had selected Potter as Seeker.

Harry Potter saw the Firebolt in the Quality Quidditch Supplies window the summer before his third year. He already had a Nimbus 2000 but he certainly wanted a Firebolt as his next broom. Every time he went to Diagon Alley, he made a point of passing the window to stare longingly at the magnificent broom. He had to muster all his willpower to refrain from keep going in and asking the price.

His later broom, the Firebolt was gifted to him by his uncle Sirius Black for a Christmas present after his Nimbus 2000 was destroyed in a Quidditch match. The Firebolt broom still remains the fastest flying broomstick in the world. having beaten the Nimbus 2001′s previous record.

Firebolt brooms, the same as the Harry Potter broom, were used by the Bulgarian and Irish Quidditch teams for the Quidditch World Cup in 1994.
